Quantization of space time and its effective dynamics

General relativity taught us that space time geometry is dynamical and quantum theory posits that dynamical objects are quantum. In this talk I will sketch a notion of quantum geometry, in which areas arise as fundamental entities. This structure is consistent with approaches that suggest to reconstruct geometry from entanglement structure. Such quantum geometries based on areas include much more degrees of freedom than the quantized metric. I will explain how these additional degrees of freedom can lead to true quantum gravitational phenomena, effecting the propagation of gravitons.
