Semiclassical Methods in Quantum Physics and Applications
Semiclassical methods build deep conceptual insights on the basis of classical trajectories and so generates powerful computational tools: Ultimately, the advantage of working with ODE's over PDE's must manifest itself. Together with the delicate asymptotic expansions originating in the wave optics of the XIX'th century, rougher approximations are required to tie complex structures, such as molecules and many body condensed matter systems, to underlying classical orbits. As quantum mechanics further incorporates a dynamical, manipulative role, following its initial success in explaining strange features of the microscopic world, a wealth of new phenomena are generated. Which of these will become intelligible, or even better interpreted from a classical perspective?
It is timely to bring together mathematicians and scientists that seek to develop semiclassical methods with the practitioners engaged in direct numerical calculations. This Workshop seeks to stimulate cross-fertilization among different communities, which in many cases have developed analogous methods independently and sometimes applied them in entirely diferent contexts. These include specific applications in manybody physics, quantum information,modern experiments, quantum chaos, condensed matter, theoretical chemistry, the Casimir effect...
Concurrently, the basic philosophical reconciliation between the classical and the quantum world view that underlies semiclassical methods will receive full consideration.

The policy of the International Institute of Physics with respect to organization of events demands collecting a registration fee from the participants. Members of the local community (institutions in Natal) are considered as free listeners and are exempt from paying the fee.

Postdocs/Professionals = R$ 800 Brazilian reais
