The aim of this workshop is to bring outstand researchers together, such that new scientific questions can be defined and investigated. Therefore a broad range of high-class young principal investigators with different scientific background but all related to quantum physics, will be invited to this workshop. In addition, a few graduate students and post doctoral researchers will be offered to attend this workshop. However, the goal is to involve all participants actively in the program.

Poster Session/Oral Presentations

 

There will be no poster session, instead, those who submitted a poster abstract, will present their posters as an oral presentation during the first week of the Workshop. The registration and the submission of abstracts - for oral presentations - will be open until January 15th.

 


Overview

 

Quantum Physics has not only led to a paradigm shift in our understanding of science by questioning concepts such as contextuality, realism and locality, but promises to revolutionize future information technologies by harnessing its quantum features. Although a large number of research directions are based on the current developments in quantum physics, the question remains how the gap between theoretical concepts and experimental realizations, in particular when considering quantum simulation and quantum computation, can be reduced. Here the recent spectacular progress on quantum simulation experiments with ultracold atoms or ions has been highly promising. Therefore, the purpose of this workshop is to provide a platform for the exchange of internationally renowned experts from complementary research areas, such that new perspectives and visions can be discussed. The focus of this international workshop is to challenge and discuss new ideas covering fundamental and applied challenges in quantum physics, as well as computer science and philosophy.

 

 


Aim of the workshop

 

The strong impact of quantum physics in science is motivating many research directions that branch out to fields of theoretical and experimental relevance. Yet, in debates on the status and future course of quantum physics it is increasingly apparent that, after many years of great technological development, the nature of quantum physics and its possible impact or applications are far from understood. Do we have a good picture of the field, as a science? What is its scientific core? What are the fundamental questions the field is addressing? If they are part of a discovery process, then what is the field aiming to discover? What are the key paradigms of the field and how are they developing? What is the role of information and complexity in this process? How far has the philosophy of quantum physics progressed in addressing these issues? Are applications of quantum information purely man-made, or can quantum mechanical enhances also be found in biology? What will be the killer applications? Which are the limits where quantum phenomena disappear? These questions and many more, are crucial for understanding the position of quantum physics and for an assessment of its methodologies. The purpose of the workshop is to discuss the state-of-the art knowledge of research in quantum physics and its related fields, and to contribute to new possible research directions that might not have been considered yet, within the unique workshop format at the IIP in Natal. This format combines (i) presenting recent research and (ii) doing (joint) research. The workshop is expected to lead to a number of new perspectives and/or initiatives, and will present a unique chance to work on ongoing scientific questions with colleagues within and across the boundaries of the discipline. The workshop intends to bring together researchers who work in different parts of the relevant disciplines, covering the forefront research in computer science, many-body physics, quantum information processing and quantum biology or closely related fields, so that viewpoints can be shared and new ideas stimulated.
